Guide To Arizona Youth Hockey
The below guide will help you understand how youth hockey works in Arizona on your journey to becoming the next Auston Matthews.
This Guide applies to youth hockey teams at the 10U (Squirt), 12U (PeeWee), 14U (Bantam), 16U (Midget), and 18U (Midget).
House Hockey - Basic/Intro Level
Typically costs $1,000 - $1,500 in total.
Seasons Runs September to March.
Approximately 45 ice sessions:
1 practice per week (usually half ice)
1 game per week
All practices and games played at one rink*
Ice Facilities that offer House Hockey:
· AZ Ice Gilbert
· Ice Den Chandler
· Ice Den Scottsdale
· AZ Ice Peoria
*Each Rink offers a House League All-Star Program from January through April. House players at each Ice Facility tryout mid-season for the All-Star teams. The House League All-Star Program typically costs around $500 - $1,000, has its own league schedule and championships (i.e. Gilbert v. Chandler v. Scottsdale v. Peoria), and usually includes 10-18 ice sessions.
Travel Hockey - A Level / Intermediate Level
Typically costs $7,000 - $15,000 (depends on amount of out-of-state travel involved)
Teams compete in the Arizona Youth Hockey League (AZYHL)
Season Typically Runs August through March.
Approximately 100 - 150 ice sessions
2-3 practices per week (mixed half ice and full ice)
1-2 games per week
Most teams take multiple out-of-state trips to play in tournaments. Typically the head coaches decide which out-of-state trips the team will take in the beginning of the season. Players typically do not have a say in the trips the team will take. Travel related costs are not included in the Program Fees. Many programs have a “soft cost” or “team fund” that requires an additional $500 - $3,500 on top of the advertised Program Fees.*
Programs that offer A-Level Travel Hockey:
· ADHL Bucks**
· Arizona Kachinas (Girls Only)
· AHU Knights
· Arizona Titans
· Arizona Bobcats
· Arizona Jr. Coyotes
· Mission Hockey
· ASU Jr. Sun Devils
· Tucson Jr. Roadrunners
· Flagstaff Northstars
* ADHL Bucks do NOT have any "soft costs" or "team funds".
** ADHL Bucks is the only program at the A-Level that does not mandate travel into its Program. The ADHL Bucks play in local tournaments that draw high caliber out-of-state teams to Arizona.
